About 8 months ago I took a change on buying a CD33 as well. Nobody overhere (Holland) knew the player, so that is always very exiting.

After some tuberolling (CBS5670, GE5670, some Russian 6n3P and WE396a) I got the player modified. The only part we modified was the endtrap. Actually everyting from the DAC onwards.

Of course we replaced some elko's and so on, but the most important change was taking out the OPAMP all together. Over here is a modifier that has very good results with taking out OPAMPs. You just replace it with a few resistances (not the right word I think) of 5 and 50 K. With this mod. the player sounded very open, wide, deep and balanced.

After this I also bought some Russian tubes that were Cryogenically treated. All together I'm very happy now.

It is very easy to mod with opa627.
1. de-solder the OPA2604 from the pcb broad.
2. add IC base or direct to solder the OPA627 set on the PCB broad.

2 is better than 1, but 1 is convience for replace other opa. e.g AD797, OPA134, OPA111 OPA128 etc.

quick quick to modifity it  !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
If mod, the different is = you buy a cpd for the sum HK$15,000.

I wait hearing from you the result of mod is same as I said.

becuase I have listened the said CDP's  before I brought CD33.
the sound of Your cdp up to now = HK$7,000.00.
If got the opa 627 same of the said photo. the sound = HK$13,000.00's cdp.

Thanks viewer, but my main point is not win, i want to share some MOD experience to other so that some friend will start MOD their CDP also. it wil have fun if everyone MOD their CDP(can know every cdp after MOd sound) :wink:  

today try to get the BG cap, the diyshop not open*#@$*^ (maybe i went there too early : ) will get it next week loh.

i want to change the BG N 10uf 50V but since i got the 10uf 100V use first loh, if not wasted...

I suggect you replace the two caps behind the tube to Black gate Non polar
e-cap 10uf/50v (red colour). at that time, it must win others much !!!!!!!!!!

Last night i measure the voltage cross both resistor it is small ~2-3V, by using fromula P=V square/R, the caculate watt is quite small.

Then replace back the resistor & cap 1 by 1 finally find out the original resistor also very hot.... the conclusion is that it is initially like that... my mistake is i never notice it early then put back all to the 1st modification.

Anyway since i replace each component n listen to it thus i know which component give what sound loh.

Observation say that:

1) solen original cap is powerful but stiff & harsh - philips cap sound sweeter, more elastic but slower.

2) only very slight diffencence between kiwame & original 1k resistor. Kiwabe very slightly clearer, original slightly blur.

I have not  idea william sir carry the RIKEN RMG resistor or not but you can ask him. 1/2w in HK cost around $10 to $15 each.

I have try parallel some caps in outup like you say.
they will made the foucs of sound not good.
I really recomment that If you used famous cap e.g Jensen, Mitil cap, Music cap, Ero, audiocap, rel-cap etc. no need to parallel other small caps. (wast money no gain).
If you used solen (lower speed caps) just parallel 0.1uf is very great.

after second day of MOD the sound getting clear n solid, more to natural, is really musical cap, thanks viewer, if not you, i will not change to Black Gate.....       many many thanks to viewer :wink: . now i can hear something i cant hear last time.

i think you use the wrong resistor, you should use at least 3W n above, bcoz i also got 1 big resistor, when i measure is only 15mm X 5mm, are you sure is 20mm X 5mm? think your resistor have to change to bigger value :?

have u both heard of cascade bypassing?

it mean use smaller cap on parallel. It use 3 cap.

Eg. main is 10uF, then 2nd is 1uF, 3rd is 0.1uF, it seems better.

If we refer the my circuit board, it seems have ready the space to do the cascade bypassing... any of u had try this?

If you want clear, you can take the old one to the diy shop to make enquiry.
If the value of the old resister and new resister also the same, it will be found that have some problem in you cdp (power supply).

The original 1k resistor is ~ 2cm in length and 0.5cm diameter.
If u refer the previous picture it is the biggest resister at power board.

You say both resistors are very hot, this is show that the W of it will not matched. You can try 5w or  measure the resistor by meter.
That is important, because if it is over load, it will be burn.

GREAT!   now you are started to MOD your CDP, good to hear your good result, i have no idea why the resistor heat up so fast, i dont have the problem(bcoz i change all 3 to kiwame.) :? better check it out.

For the sound speed slow i think is because of cap at the output coupling, bcoz i use Mundorf silver/oil, it fast... :wink: i dont think if you change tube the speed will be faster....

I can't wait till weekend and i had done 1st stage of my mod on the cdp last night!!!! see the photo : )

luckily the soldering work is easier than i intially thought...and the solder superwhite bought me is much better & easier to solder....

so i had change t coupling cap, 3 resistor and a 47uF ecap.

The initial result i found at initial stage is:

1) the noise of the filter in between the power coupling cap disappear---? great!!! i like it....

2) the detail and resolution increase and cleaner especially for high & mid...
3) slightly sweeter (especially violin, guitar & vocal)
4) BUT....the speed is slower so i need to sacrify a bit of my lovely fast bass (anyway i think this can be improve by change tube la)

Overall i satisfy with the mod and start to addicted ... this time die liao lah!

Anyway i found that the 2 resistor (circle at the picture) heat up very fast and very hot especially the kiwame 1k resistor... so what do u both think? is it ok??

Just MOD my CDP on the ecap, change all the small value ecap to BG, but the 4700uf 16V n 25V have to wait, is too expansive

The 0.1/uf look like can fix on "marked B" but be sure the + - of silim e-cap at the back of PCB broad.

0.1/fu in my view is better than small uf. because in my experience, 0.01/uf
will made the sound not match very well.

Roe e-cap golden colour is sweet and warm sound suitable for tube cdp.
same as Ero you say.
mallory (black colour) more powerful good for bass.  siemens GPF  sweet and warm sound if made in china not good.  
So I will try Roe Golden colour.

Below are some modification i'm going to do since most matrial is ready:

1) change power supply coupling cap to WIMA MP3-X2, 0.22uF/275VAC
2) Change 47uF/160V ecap on power board to Philips 47uF/250V (042T HP)
3) change 3 resistor on pwr borad (1k, 47R, 100R) to Kiwame

Beside, for 470uF/40v ecap i got the ERO (gold colour), mallory (black colour) and siemens GPF (B41010/B41293) so which 1 is better?

1. Janzten MKP 0.1/uf just HK$12 each made by Denmark.
2. Taiwan UCC flim cap SPP type 0.1uf/630v just around HK$12.00 each,
    70%-80% = MultiCap. I also use it in my cheap DAC result is good.

If you want parallel with enla e-cap, try Multi-cap RTX, PPFXS serise,music cap cost around hk$750-100 each.

orERO, RIFA and SPRAGUE VITAMINQ flim cap both good.

I think modifity this part HK$200 is ok!!!!!!!!!  good sound result (resonable).

I read it over, I think can replace flim cap to 10u/f with 0.1uf.
E.g ero MKT 10uf, ero MKT 0.1uf green colour. good sound lower costs. I used it in my cheap DAC china Lite DAC-AH Modificed. Very good sound for all range
      Plilip e-cap 100uf (blue colour) with 0.1uf flim cap (M-cap) good sound high costs. This recomment by expert in hk.
      SCR solen 10uf with wima black 0.1uf lower costs quit good sound or         0.1uf audio cap (very expenvise)  very good sound (golden )  This recomment by china expert and oversea.
Now it is used elna slim e-cap is ok la..... or  you can add 0.1uf flim cap for high notes.
